I really hate punishing students. But sometimes, it's just necessary. On TV and in the movies, many times we see teachers depicted as mean, old hags who love to punish students. However, in real life, that's just not the case!
The policy of the music teacher that I'm subbing for was that if students forgot their recorders three times, they received a detention. Well, I had a student reach three times...so I need to issue a detention. I expressed my regret about it to the principal, and she understood how bad I felt. But a policy is a policy, and I have to enforce the rule or else I won't have any cooperation from the students. I just don't like to dole out punishments.
